Elsburg residents help restore their town

Elsburg SAPS together with locals in the area raised awareness against substance abuse.

The Elsburg SAPS station commander, Col Linah Thethe, joined forces with the members of Central Bikers Church recently, to champion a ride-and-walk initiative called Say No to Drugs.

Thethe was joined by her station’s social crime prevention coordinator, Rose Mohlapeng Monageng, and communication officer, Const Daphney Phooko.

“Specific problematic streets were identified, prior to the roll out of the campaign, which were Voortrekker, Els and Kruger streets,” said Phooko.

“During the ride-and-walk we launched a door-to-door campaign which included small bibles, pamphlets detailing domestic violence, robbery and drug abuse contact numbers and various avenues to get help.”

The aim of the awareness campaign was to decrease drug-related crimes in the area, domestic violence, and the abuse of women and children as well as to motivate the community to abstain from criminal activities and help decrease the outrageous intake of drugs and alcohol.

“It is our responsibility to restore hope to those who have given up on their lives and have since turned into substance abuse addicts,” said Phooko.

“We’ve found that the use of substances such as illegal drugs, dagga and alcohol, often lead the users to commit crimes, whereby they end up robbing innocent citizens, family and friends of their belongings, just to feed their cravings of mood altering substances.”

Thethe thanked all community members who joined them in fighting crime in their policing area.
