Multi-disciplinary engineering company Hatch made a worthy donation to Grade Seven and Eight girl learners at Hawk Academy last Friday.
Kiran Rughoonandan, from Hatch, along with nine other colleagues took part in an internal work competition recently where they won R5 000 in prize money.
“We made a video depicting collaboration in various forms, and we won,” said Kiran.
“Instead of splitting the money, we had the idea to donate it to charity.
“I met Sherie de Wet, CEO of Palesa Pads, last year, and thought it would be worthwhile to get in contact with her and join in helping underprivileged girls.”

Sherie, along with her team from Palesa Pads, joined Hatch in making a stop at the school for a hygiene talk and to explain to the learners how their eco-friendly, reusable pads worked.
“I am passionate about education, so when Sherie said she had the perfect donation recipients, I was pleased to learn it was a school,” said Kiran.
The team was originally set to make a donation of R3 000 worth of pads, however, word got around of what they were doing at work, and they managed to double their donation to R6 000 worth of pads which went to 55 learners at the school.
“We feel happy considering many of the learners come from disadvantaged homes,” said Constance Gotami, head of department for the intersen phase at Hawk Academy.
“They now have sustainable pads they can reuse for a period of five years.
“This will definitely help release the financial burden on them and their families of having to purchase disposable pads monthly.”
