EMPD targets speedsters in Germiston and Alberton

Eight men were arrested on charges of reckless and negligent driving.

The EMPD high-speed unit conducted operations last Saturday and Sunday.

Two operations were conducted last Saturday in Alberton and one last Sunday in Germiston, resulting in a total of eight alleged speedsters ending up behind bars.

The first operation, last Saturday, took place between 6am and 11am on Michelle Avenue between Blue Crane Road and the R59 Bridge.

Three arrests were made on this 60km/h stretch of Michelle Avenue.

The arrested drivers were all men, aged 28, 29 and 38, and were caught doing speeds of 111, 98 and 96km/h.

They were locked up at the Brackendowns Police Station but were subsequently released after they posted R1 000 bail each.

They are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrateā€™s Court soon.

The second operation, last Saturday, took place between 11am and noon in Alrode on Heidelberg Road between Dekenah Road and Arch Bridge, which is a 70km/h zone.

One 50-year-old speedster in a white Audi 4, who claimed to be rushing to buy tyres, was clocked at 103km/h and was arrested.

He was charged at the Alberton Police Station for reckless and negligent driving.

He was expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrateā€™s Court last Monday.

The third operation took place last Sunday between 6am and 11am on the N3 highway south between the Geldenhuys Interchange and the Rand Airport Road exit.

Four alleged speedsters were nabbed.

They were all men between the ages of 22 and 36, driving sedans and were caught doing 185, 184, 166 and 163km/h, respectively in this 120km/h zone.

The speedsters were detained at the Germiston Police Station on charges of reckless and negligent driving.

They are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrateā€™s Court soon.
