Germiston SAPS run day long awareness campaign from CBD to Dukathole

Police target CBD and surrounding areas with latest public drinking and sexual offences awareness campaign.

Members of the Germiston SAPS, including officers from the Social Crime Prevention Unit, sector commanders and the Germiston SAPS communications department, hit the streets of Germiston, last Friday, for a worthy cause.

The officers held an awareness campaign to help bring an end to the reported rise in public drinking in the city and encouraged the community to report sexual offences.

“The Report Public Drinking and Sexual Offences Awareness Campaign stemmed from the realisation that locals seemed to have forgotten that public drinking is an offence in the eyes of the law,” said Const Maxwell Mabunda, communications officer for the Germiston police.

“The current statistics on gender-based violence and femicide were the driving force behind us getting out into the community to hand out pamphlets informing residents about the different types of sexual offences and explaining how to report these types of crimes to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.”

The men and women in blue kick-started their community engagement programme in the CBD and concluded the day’s agenda in Dukathole.

“A number of Dukathole residents said it was good to see the police in their area, engaging with them on issues they faced daily,” said Mabunda.

“We managed to distribute about 1 800 pamphlets on the day.

“We hope our people read them and refrain from criminal activities.”

Germiston SAPS Col Andy Pieke helped to educate the community about public drinking and sexual offences in the CBD, last Friday. He was part of a team made up of officers from various departments at the Germiston Police Station.
