Library Week aims to promote literacy

During Library Week defaulters can return outstanding books without being fined.

National Library Week is in full swing and will end on March 23.

This is an annual event celebrated in the third week of March.

The celebration aims to support the national drive to promote literacy through the provision of library and information services.

As part of the National Library Week celebration, the metro’s libraries will exempt all users with any long-overdue books from paying fines.

Boxes will be placed in libraries where users can place long-overdue books without being fined.

This year’s theme for Library Week is Collaborate @ Your Library.

The theme seeks to emphasise and promote the idea of working together at the metro’s libraries and to encourage libraries and communities to forge mutually beneficial relationships.

“Libraries are so much more than just books, they reflect and serve communities according to their needs,” said Ekurhuleni’s MMC for Community Services, Clr Dora Mlambo.

The Library Week celebrations will also recognise the vital role played by libraries in integrating users into new worlds, characterised by the sharing of information.

This applies to all libraries, including those that are based in schools, public libraries and academic libraries.

They offer vital resources to address community needs and are places where the community gathers to discuss community issues.
