Firefighter recovering after attack in Dukathole

The city manager has spoken out strongly against attacks on emergency services personnel.

Ekurhuleni’s city manager, Dr Imogen Mashazi, has condemned the barbaric attacks on emergency services personnel while on duty.

Mashazi made her feelings clear while visiting an injured Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) firefighter, Rovhiwa Mohlola (35), in hospital.

Mohlola sustained gunshot wounds while attending to an injured patient last weekend in Dukathole.

“We urge members of the public to protect the emergency services workers when they are out there to save lives.

“An attack on emergency services personnel defeats the purpose of saving lives, which is what they are here for,” lamented Mashazi.

She wished Mohlola a speedy recovery.

The city manager further explained that in the recent past such incidents were a common occurrence, forcing the metro to embark on a publicity campaign to expose the dangers faced by emergency services personnel when attending to life-threatening emergencies and fires in the area.

“These attacks are senseless and unwarranted because these employees are putting their lives on the line to save other fellow humans,” she said.

“As a metro, we shall forever be grateful to these men and women for the sacrifice and dedication to public service.”

Furthermore, Mashazi gave an undertaking that the injured Mohlola and the rest of the team who was on duty with her on the day of the incident would receive counselling and other related support towards their full rehabilitation from the metro’s social development department.
