Trains delayed following derailment

Commuters asked to be patient as trains are delayed by up to 60 minutes, this morning (Wednesday).

Train commuters can expect up to a hour delay this morning (Wednesday) following a train derailment at the Elandsfontein Train Station, yesterday.

Lillian Mofokeng, senior manager: marketing and communication for Gauteng Metrorail, Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa has asked commuters to be patient.

“Metrorail would like to inform all loyal commuters and employers about an anticipated train service delay of up to 60 minutes due to the availability of only three lines instead of four for train operations,” she said.

“The root cause of the accident has not been established as yet since the incident occurred during afternoon peak period.

“Priority has been given to safe movement of trains.”

Mofokeng further explained a board of enquiry has been established to determine the cause of the derailment.

“Metrorail technical teams are already on site to clear the scene this morning,” said Mofokeng.

“The extent of the damages, time of recovery and related costs are not known at this stage.

“Once the derailed train has been cleared, the technical team will then begin with repairing the damages on the affected line.”

Metrorail apologised for any inconvenience caused.
