Members of the Germiston Flying Squad arrested four men and recovered two unlicensed firearms at the Gosforth Plaza on the N17 highway in Germiston at 9.45pm on Wednesday.
“It is alleged the men shot and killed a man in an open veld opposite Ntokozweni School in KwaThema,” said Const Ntombikayise Ngcobo, communications officer for the Germiston Flying Squad.
“The suspects were seen driving a black VW Polo and a member of the community called 10111 and gave the information to the police.”
Sgt Solly Chavalala and Const Harold Kgare Mokgari from the Germiston Flying Squad, who were on the N17 conducting routine patrols, received a lookout from the SAPS communication radio about the black VW Polo.
The members spotted a motor vehicle fitting the description and they approached and stopped it at the Gosforth Plaza.
“Upon searching the car, two .38 special revolvers were found in the possession of the suspects and the officers also suspected the motor vehicle had been stolen as the registration number of the vehicle had no information attached to it,” said Ngcobo.
Four suspects, between the ages of 35 and 42 years old, were arrested on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle and murder.
The suspects are due to appear in court soon.
“We thank the member of the community who called and gave the police the information about the shooting as with his information we managed to arrest the perpetrators,” said Ngcobo.
