Three jailed for suspected stolen property and bribery

Police arrest two suspects with suspected stolen property, who later reveal the address of a third suspect, where over 200 suspected stolen items were found.

While patrolling in their policing precinct, the Germiston SAPS Task Team randomly stopped a white BMW occupied by two men, recently, adding to the successful arrests made by the station in recent weeks.

Believing the men looked suspicious, the officers searched the vehicle, in which they found one Sony TV, a microwave, a tablet and a crowbar.

“Whilst searching the vehicle and the suspects, the officers were allegedly offered a R1 000 bribe by the offenders, who were asking to be released,” said Const Maxwell Mabunda, communications officer for the Germiston police.

“The officers proceeded by arresting the men, aged between 30 and 39, for possession of suspected stolen property and possession of house-breaking implements.”

Upon their arrest, the two men revealed to the police that they were working together with another man, a foreign national from Zimbabwe who could be found at Stone Arch Estate, in Castleview.

The task team went in search of the third suspect at the address given by the apprehended perpetrators, where they found a man fitting the description of the wanted third suspect.

The police uncovered various stolen goods at the residence including two plasma TVs, a Sony amplifier, 24 TV remotes, a battery charger, six tablets, five cellphones, 19 watches, 140 memory sticks, four external hard drives, one DStv decoder, one PlayStation game console, 18 bottles of perfume, all of which the owner of the house could not account for.

“Just like his colleagues, the third suspect allegedly offered the officers an undisclosed amount of money as a bribe, urging the officers to turn a blind eye on the incident,” said Mabunda.

“All items were seized by the police, and the suspect was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property and bribery.

“Furthermore, the suspect failed to produce a passport or documents proving he is legally in the country.”

All suspects appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where one suspect was granted bail and the other two were denied bail and were remanded into custody in the Germiston Police Station cells.
