Special medal ceremony honours EMPD officers

A number of EMPD officers received medals at a special parade.

Thirty-five members of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) were decorated with loyal service and 2010 Football World Cup support medals at a medal parade in Kempton Park, last Friday.

The members were the first of 1 100 recipients who will receive honorary decorations for dedicating their lives to serve, protect and enforce the law.

Their service medals ranged from 20 to 40 years of loyal service, which for many started before the amalgamation of the nine towns that were incorporated to form Ekurhuleni.

Ekurhuleni’s executive mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina said that 5 000 more capable and fit metro police officers will be recruited to join the EMPD over the next five years in a bid to double the efforts to maintain law and order in the metro.

He also congratulated the medal recipients for reaching their milestones.

Speaking at the parade, Gauteng MEC for Safety and Security Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane said, “We appreciate the passion the police are showing in their work.

“These medals will motivate them to perform their duties excellently in their communities.

“We thank them for their unbroken service that has been characterised by dedication and hard work.”

Supt Ronald Botha, a recipient of a 20-year service medal, dedicated the medal to his late friend and colleague who was killed in the line of duty about three years ago.

He said it is rewarding to receive because of the personal sentiments he has attached to the medal.
