Athletes aim to charge ahead of the competition

Four of Primrose High School’s athletes will head to Pretoria to compete in the Gauteng Championships this weekend.

Primrose High School’s athletes have been hard at work out on the athletics track this year.

The performance of the school’s athletes has improved in leaps and bounds in recent years and this season has been no different.

This is evident in the fact that four of the school’s athletes will be competing in the Gauteng Championships, which will be held in Pretoria this weekend.

Isaac Muyumba, Siyabongo Uzoho and Misha Pzimba will be competing in the 800m race while Ntokozo Gumede will take part in the
3 000m run.

All four athletes agreed that though they are a bit nervous about the upcoming championships, they are also excited and are not worried about any school they may face in their respective divisions.

The school’s sport director and coach Michael Cupido is very proud of the learners’ achievements and admits he’s taken a different approach with the athletes this year.

“In previous years if they said they only wanted to compete in one event, I would try and convince them to still compete in other events.

“This year, however, I agreed and then focused on preparing them as best I could for their chosen event,” Michael said.
Isaac, Siyabongo, Misha and Ntokozo, agree that this has been a great advantage to them.

“In previous years when you competed in a number of events you would end up feeling a bit tired and stressed for your main event,” explained Isaac.

“But this year we are able to solely focus on the event we feel most comfortable with and are able to put all our energy into giving out best performance.”

Michael credited his team, the school’s principal, André Grobler, and the school’s management, for their unwavering support which he believes has helped the young athletes to reach their full potential.

When asked what they love most about athletics and competing, the learners, who train every week day, all had different responses.

“I love the vibe and all the support we receive,” said Isaac.

Siyabongo said, “I love the support I receive and that athletics is a great way to keep fit.”

“I love the challenge and the thrill you get when you compete,” said Notokzo.

While Misha said, “I love the feeling of being in control I get from athletics.”

School principal André wishes the school’s athletes all the best for the upcoming championships.

“We are so proud of our athletes and know they will do well,” he said.
