Council honours local stars

Metro gives special awards to three recipients.

The metro hosted three distinguished individuals at the council meeting held in the Germiston Council Chambers on Thursday.

The three received awards for their exceptional track records in their careers and for being a source of inspiration to others.

Connie Chiume, an actress who has acted in numerous television programmes, including Zone 14 and Rhythm City and starred in the award-winning Hollywood movie Black Panther was given the Excellence Award for her contribution to the arts, film and entertainment industry. Bernard Parker, an Ekurhuleni-born soccer star, who’s played for Kaizer Chiefs for the past nine years and has also played for Bafana Bafana, was awarded an Excellence Award for his consistently superb performance.

In an ultimate move, the council also presented the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to Nelson ‘Teenage’ Dladla, who was its very first recipient.

Well known for his exceptional and creative skills on the soccer pitch, Dladla is fondly remembered for his unmatched soccer skills.

Speaker of council, Alde Patricia Kumalo, shares a light moment with Kaizer Chiefs star Bernard Parker after he received an award during the council meeting in the Germiston Council Chambers on Thursday.

His soccer career spanned over 30 years and he continues to transfer his knowledge and skills as a coach in the Mamelodi Sundowns FC junior structures.

The City of Ekurhuleni Council Excellence Award is given to individuals from Ekurhuleni who have performed exceptionally well within their chosen profession.
