Flamingos still need your help

Lory Park Zoo to build new home for flamingos.

Lory Park Zoo in Midrand is now home to a total of 60 lesser flamingos.

The recently received birds were ill and were being treated separately from the others, but are reported to be doing very well.

Though the zoo still awaits confirmation as to what will happen with the flamingos going forward, some changes are expected to be made at the zoo as the birds grow each day.

According to Bianca van Eck, daughter of Eddy and Marty van Eck who owns the zoo, they are currently building a larger area designated for the flamingos.

This living area will suit their needs, size and age at this stage.

Lesser flamingos get comfortable in their new home at Lory Park Zoo in Midrand after they were taken away from Kamfers Dam in Bloemfontein.

To assist with keeping the flamingos’ body temperature normal at all times, the zoo has added 10 two-metre high patio heaters, as well as 10 nine kilogram gas bottles to their wish list.

The zoo is also still in need of other items, such as sardines, shrimp, eggs, Nestum cereal (rice), newspapers, teddy bears, towels and containers to hold and freeze food.

To find out more about how you can help contact Bianca on 082 394 8762 or send an email to bianca@tmtsa.net.

Donations can be dropped off at the zoo between 7am and 4.30pm daily.
