Community gets active and healthy

The metro held it’s first ‘Fit for Free’ aerobathon session of the year at Germiston Lake, last Saturday morning.

Staying fit and healthy is high on many people’s list of priorities heading into a new year.

With this in mind, and to help the community of Ekurhuleni reach and maintain their fitness goals, the metro hosted the first ‘Fit for Free’ aerobathon session of the year last Saturday morning.

The event saw hundreds of enthusiastic community members and fitness fanatics from across the city descending on Germiston Lake for high energy and sweat-dripping three-hour long work-out session, which was led by professional fitness instructors.

The day offered participants an array of action-packed activities from Zumba, steps, aerobics, kick-boxing and karate, to name but a few.

This was not the first event of its kind. The metro officially launched the project four years ago.

“Our aerobics marathons have grown in leaps and bounds particularly in townships with residents arriving in droves at community parks and stadiums for the ‘Fit for Free’ sessions,” said director of Sports and Recreation in the metro Atwell Sijadu.

There were smiles all round as music played and young and old did their best to keep up with the instructors, who encouraged the crowd through each routine.

Atwell commended the community for their participation in these sessions.

Among the crowd was Andile Sibeko (36) from Katlehong, who was diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes and was told by doctors to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

“Regular exercising and changing my diet was recommended, so I decided to join these free aerobics sessions and have never looked back,” Andile said.

“Today I am as fit as a fiddle and very healthy.

“A big thank you goes to Ekurhuleni for the ‘Fit for Free’ sessions.”

Atwell further said that over the years the metro has seen a huge improvement in communities’ fitness habits.

“Our communities are making use of the outdoor gym equipment installed in our community parks and are eager to participate in free aerobics sessions.

“We are now looking into officially introducing and facilitating the parkruns.

“We won’t stop until we make being fit and healthy a fashionable lifestyle for our residents,” said Atwell.
