DEMS warns residents to be alert to possible flooding

Residents should take precautions with regard to the possibility of flooding.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) is warning residents and industry and business communities to be extra cautious abput possible flooding in flood-prone areas.

This comes after the weather forecast predicted an 80 to 100 per cent chance of showers and thundershowers going into the weekend.

“Heavy rain may also result in flooding of rivers, low-lying bridges, open trenches, furrows, culverts and even canals, which can cause damage to adjacent areas and those downstream,” said district manager media liaison William Ntladi.

“Parents with children walking to school are also warned to be alert and cautious about their children’s safety with regard to the crossing of flooded streams.”

Ntladi added that drivers and pedestrians should avoid crossing under subway bridges, low-lying bridges and swollen streams where water is above ankle level.

“If you can’t see the road surface because of flood water, turn around and use an alternative road,” Ntladi said.

He also advised the community to listen out for weather warnings and to obey the instructions of DEMS or EMPD officials.

DEMS is on high alert for any eventualities that may occur as a result of the rain.

Communities affected by flooding or any life-threatening emergencies are advised to call the emergency call centre on 011 458 0911, 112 from a cellphone or the national emergency number 10177 immediately for swift intervention to take place.
