Seven speedsters to face charges

EMPD members conducted speed law enforcement on the N12 highway.

The EMPD High-Speed Unit was out on the N12 highway in Meadowdale, between Sam Green Bridge and the Edenvale Road off-ramp, on Sunday, to conduct speed law enforcement.

The operation took place between 5am and 11am and resulted in the arrest of seven motorists for excessive speeding.

The drivers clocked speeds of 167, 170, 175, 177, 190 and 211km/h.

They were driving a Ford SUV, Opel sedan, Toyota SUV, Audi sedan, Ford sedan, Mercedes Benz sedan and a Suzuki motorcycle, respectively.

The arrestees were all males, ranging between 28 and 54 years old.

All cited various reasons from rushing home to church, to open a shop, late for a race, to hospital and the biker who clocked 211km/h said he was late for a bike run at Hartebeespoort Dam.

The arrested drivers were charged at the Bedfordview Police Station with reckless and negligent driving but were later released after each had posted bail of R1 500.

They are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
