One arrested for allegedly damaging property

Elsburg community member helps with the arrest of an alleged cable thief.

An Elsburg local noticed a suspicious-looking man handling cables at a substation situated at the Elspark Sports Grounds last Saturday.

Though the resident first thought the man might be fixing the substation, he approached the substation for a closer look.

As he approached, the unknown man tried to set off on foot, but he was caught by the resident.

The two went back to the substation where the perpetrator showed the man the damage he had caused and admitted to trying to cut and steal the cables.

“The 36-year-old suspect was detained in Elsburg SAPS custody, pending his appearance in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon to face charges of malicious damage to property,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg police.
