Seven illegal taverns closed in Primrose’s informal settlements

Primrose police close down seven illegal taverns and arrest five suspects during operation in Makause, Delport and Marathon informal settlements.

Seven illegal taverns were closed down during a Primrose police operation recently.

“During the operation officers entered the Makause, Delport and Marathon informal settlements on foot and observed residents buying alcohol at the three taverns,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose SAPS.

“Each of the owners was asked for a liquor licence which they could not give to police.”

Five suspects, aged between 26 and 56, were arrested and charged with selling liquor without a licence.

A large amount of alcohol was confiscated from each tavern and taken to the Primrose Police Station, where it will be destroyed at a later stage.

“We are declaring war on the illegal sale of alcohol,” said Maome.

“There are many reasons for this but perhaps the most important is that we believe serious crimes like murder and assault increase with alcohol abuse.”

The arrested suspects were detained at the Primrose Police Station, but were later released after paying admission of guilt fines.
