‘Be cautious when using an ATM’, warns Germiston SAPS

A recent spike in residents being robbed outside banks and near ATMs has prompted the local police to urge residents to be observant and beware of scams.

Over the festive season, the Germiston SAPS were inundated with complaints by residents pertaining to crimes at ATM machines.

“A number of victims alleged to have been robbed after leaving banks or ATMs,” said Const Maxwell Mabunda, communications officer for the Germiston police.

“Many recounted an incident in which they spotted an amount of money on the ground, after picking it up a stranger walked up to them and demanded they share the money.

“The perpetrators then lured victims to a quiet place where they robbed them of the money they had just withdrawn.”

The Germiston SAPS urges residents to be cautious at all times when leaving the bank or using an ATM.

“Remember not to trust anyone when you are busy at an ATM, even those who look innocent.

“Should you have difficulty completing your transaction rather seek the help of security officers on guard,” Mabunda added.
