Little ones take on their first day of ‘big school’

The Grade Ones of Sunnyridge Primary School took their first steps of their school careers on Wednesday.

Sunnyridge Primary School welcomed four classes of Grade Ones to the school on Wednesday. Among them was Mpho Mafagane who shared a smile with his dad Billy Ntshavheni before heading into class.

“Our day is running smoothly, our teachers and learners are ready and organised for the year ahead,” said Sunnyridge Primary School principal Marianna Odendaal.

The school, like many, opened its doors on Wednesday, welcoming a new year of Grade Ones and three new teachers.

“We have 107 Grade Ones, divided into four classes,” said Odendaal.

To remember their first day of school the Grade Ones had professional school photos taken, while the school’s other learners spent the morning getting reacquainted with the school and had the opportunity to share news from their holidays.

“This year we are introducing a new discipline system that was compiled by the school’s governing body and management team.

“The teachers spent the morning going through the system with learners before classes officially started at 10.30am,” Odendaal explained.

Odendaal believes the year ahead will be a positive and exciting one.

“This year we will be introducing ‘Letter Land’ which will encourage our learners to read and teach them to spell,” she said.

Neo Mahlobo and Rirhandzu Lamula were eager to start big school on Wednesday. The pair was among the Grade Ones who joined Bernè van Rooi’s class at Sunnyridge Primary School.

Allanè Ho and Bongumenzi Khumalo started their school career at Sunnyridge Primary School. The pair is part of Lindsay Thomson’s Grade One class.

Oluhle Nombela and Tyler Knoetze were excited to start Grade One at Sunnyridge Primary School.
