Motorists, pedestrians implored to take care on the roads

Road safety was in the spotlight at the launch of the metro’s safer festive season campaign.

MMC for Community Safety for the metro Clr Vivienne Chauke urged road users to ensure that they obey the rules of the road, on Tuesday.

She also asked them to be courteous to fellow road users during the holiday period in an effort to reduce the road carnage that normally occurs during the festive season.

This passionate and earnest plea was made during the launch of a safer festive season campaign that took place on the N3 highway southbound between the Grey Avenue on-ramp and the Heidelberg turn-off.

An EMPD K9 Unit member and Gauteng Traffic Police members search a taxi during the roadblock held to launch the safer festive season campaign on the N3 highway southbound, on Tuesday.

“With the industrial shutdown, the closing of schools and long road trips to holiday destinations, this period sees high traffic volumes with revelers prone to high alcohol consumption which leads to crashes.

“It is essential that we all do the right thing and contribute to the reduction of avoidable crashes that are normally accompanied by unpleasant ramifications,” Chauke said.

During the roadblock held at the launch, EMPD officers, metro officials, members of the Gauteng Traffic Police and officials from the Gauteng Department of Education distributed pamphlets on road safety, the dangers of substance abuse and domestic abuse and wished motorists a safe and enjoyable holiday period.

Although the objective of the launch was educational, 71 citations were issued for various offences, three vehicles were discontinued and two people were arrested for fraudulent documents and possession of dagga during the roadblock which took place between 9am and midday.

Over 60 law enforcement officers stopped more than 800 vehicles during the roadblock.
