Twenty-one cars damaged as plastic industry strike escalates

Protestors allegedly set nine vehicles alight and damaged an additional 12 during a demonstration this afternoon in Wadeville.

About 30 protestors alleged to be taking part in the plastic industry strike caused a fire which damaged 21 vehicles at a plastic recycling company in Wadeville, today (Monday).

According to Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS, witnesses said the protestors assaulted the security officer who was on duty at noon and made their way onto the premises.

“The suspects burnt nine passenger vehicles, and vanadlised 12 others,” said Phooko.

“At this moment it is unknown what they used to start the fire.”

Speaking to the GCN, William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) said the company’s building was not damaged during the blaze, nor were there any injuries or fatalities recorded.

“An officer from the SAPS Public Order Policing Unit for the East Rand was robbed of his phone during the incident.

“An investigation of malicious damage to property has been opened,” said Phooko.

More information will follow as it is made available.
