Sunnyridge Primary School held quite a memorable event to honour their 2018 prefects last Friday.
Leaders who stood out in the academics, sports and culture categories were in the running to be crowned Mr and Miss Leadership 2018.
The event, a first of its kind, featured a special segment to show appreciation for their prefects who displayed great leadership skills throughout the year.
All voting for Mr and Miss Leadership was cast by the leaders.
Michaela Prokopi (headgirl 2018) was crowned Miss Leadership 2018.
She was also awarded a special award, the Frikkie Odendaal Award, by Frikkie Odendaal, head of Grade Seven and head of leaders.
“My award was based on simple criteria, involving how a learner strives to excel in every community-related project, how they had changed the school environment and their interaction with others,” said Frikkie.
Amirah Ansar was chosen as the second princess and Tyra Topham as the first princess.
The school’s deputy head leader for culture, Aphiwe Mashazi, won Mr Leadership 2018.
He also took home the Camaraderie Leadership and the Shooting Star Leadership awards.
Kyle Madurai took home the second prince title.
Sean Mkumbira, the first prince, also bagged the Ambitious Leadership Award.
The vice-head of leaders, maths teacher and one of the organisers of the awards ceremony, Laurenzo Thomson, awarded Carmel Bofwa the Mr Laurenzo Thomson Award for his display of resilience throughout the year.
“It is important to teach our learners that though failure is an unfortunate part of life, getting up after each trial and trying again is something commendable,” said Laurenzo.
“We all go through a rough patch but we must find a way to bounce back and the recipient of my award has shown concern for others and great resilience.”
