Weather Watch – Severe thunderstorm a possibility for Gauteng

Severe thunderstorms, damaging winds and hail could hit Gauteng warns the South African Weather Service.

After a hot couple of the days in Germiston the South African Weather Service has warned residents to be on alert as severe thunderstorms and heavy rain could hit the province in the late afternoon heading into the evening.

The service has predicted that the wet weather will last the rest of the week and into the weekend.

In addition to this, residents are warned to prepare for a hot week as a heatwave sweeps through the province.

Temperatures are set to hits highs of 35 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday and remain in the 30s until Friday.

To protect your health during these hot temperatures, remember to keep cool, drink plenty of liquids and stay out of the sun as much as possible.

Heatstroke and dehydration are a serious risk for both animals and humans during this time.

Severe heat stroke or exhaustion signs or symptoms include the following:

  • Severe headache.
  • Weakness or disorientation.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Muscle cramps.
  • Severe thirst.
 Monitor people who have these symptoms.

Veld fires are expected in places in Gauteng due to the hot weather.

Motorists are reminded to take the necessary precautions when travelling in wet weather.

They are encouraged to reduce speed and increase their following distance and headlights should be kept on at all times to increase visibility.

Residents should also ensure that they shelter their pets.
