Mother and daughter hit by alleged drunk driver

Four-year-old girl dies after her and her mother are hit by an alleged drunk driver.

While walking in the streets of Dukathole Extension Nine recently, a woman and her four-year-old daughter were run over by an alleged drunk driver.

According to witnesses, the car, driven by a man, first drove past the two only to reverse at a speed hitting the woman and subsequently coming to a halt near a gate of one of the surrounding homes.

The child was found stuck between the car and the gate.

The injured mother then tried to free her child with the assistance of bystanders.

“Witnesses claim that the driver was in such an inebriated state that he was unable to get out of the car following the incident,” said Const Maxwell Mabunda, communications officer for the Germiston police.

“Once the girl was pulled out from between the car and gate, she was rushed to hospital using the vehicle of one of the witnesses.

“Unfortunately the car got stuck on the road, and an ambulance was then called.”

Paramedics declared the child dead upon their arrival at the broken down vehicle.

“Following the incident, the perpetrator disappeared for 15 days,” said Mabunda.

“Upon his return, he came to the police station to give his statement, where he lied to the police saying he was not driving on the day as he does not have a driver’s licence.

“During the ongoing investigation he then admitted to lying and that he was the driver on the day.

“He was arrested on charges of culpable homicide and he’s also facing charges of perjury.

“WO Tobbi Coetzee of the Germiston SAPS detectives showed great effort in putting the perpetrator behind bars.”
