School celebrates milestone

Community members, learners and teachers came together to celebrate Laerskool Oosterkruin Primary’s 25th birthday.

The icy wind and clouds overhead did nothing to dampen the spirits of the community members, learners, parents and teachers who attended Laerskool Oosterkruin Primary’s fun-filled 25th birthday opskop.

Silly string and laughter floated in the air, last Saturday, as young and old took in the sights, sounds, fun and activities at the festival.

The event aimed to celebrate and highlight the school’s 25 years in the community.

Oosterkruin was opened in 1993 by Maria van Riebeeck, AJ Koen and Johan Greybe and has grown from strength to strength over the years.

In 2000, the school opened its own Grade R school, Osieland, and in 2016 established their first English Grade One class and changed their name.

André du Plessis was the headmaster of the school until 1998 when Chris Kruger was appointed and he has been in charge of the very successful school ever since.

Oosterkruin’s main focus over the years has remained the same, to offer learners a well-balanced teaching environment that incorporates academics, sport and culture.

The school’s values, disciplinary and religious principles have remained unchanged over its 25-year existence.

One of the main attractions of the school’s celebration was a photo gallery, which displayed photos dating back to 1993.

Guests were invited to take their time learning more about the school and its traditions, through photos.

The special event also allowed the school to launch its new school anthem, which accommodates the English-speaking learners.

“It was truly a nostalgic moment,” said Kruger.

“The melody is still recognisable as the anthem written in 1993 by Deon Robertse but with the new lyrics it left many with goosebumps.”

Among the day’s many highlights, which included stalls, games and a potjiekos competition, the teachers’ dramatic and fantastic concert stood out.

The pavilion was packed as guests waited in anticipation to meet a number of special guests, including Elvis, Dolly Parton and the Spice Girls.

“The school is proud to be a beacon in the community.

“Over the next 25 years we hope to reach new heights,” said Kruger.

“Together we will stand with the future in our hands.”
