Update – Two nabbed, three escape in Shamrock Road armed robbery

Primrose police officers exchanged bullets with suspects as they attempted to escape following a Shamrock Road armed robbery.

Two men, aged 24 and 26, were arrested while three escaped following an armed robbery at a business in Shamrock Road, in Primrose, on Wednesday (today).

“It is reported that the five suspects, two armed with firearms, entered a store at around 10am and loaded two bags with laptops and cellphones,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

Bags containing cellphones and laptops were seized by the Primrose police following an armed robbery in Shamrock Road on Wednesday.

Patrolling officers from the Primrose Police Station were alerted to the robbery by a community member who was passing the store.

“When the suspects saw the police they opened fire and the officers returned fire,” said Maome.

While three of the suspects made their escape in a red Ford Focus, the other two ran down Shamrock Road, towards Delport informal settlement.

“Officers called for backup and officers from the EMPD and JMPD, as well as personnel from Spider Tactical Response, responded to the call,” said Maome.

One of the suspects, who had fled on foot, attempted to escape in a vehicle stopped at the traffic lights.

“The motorist had abandoned the vehicle when he heard the gunfire and saw the suspects running towards him,” said Maome.

“The accused jumped into the vehicle, which was still running, and attempted to drive away toward the Germiston CBD but crashed outside Delport informal settlement.”

The men were finally cornered and arrested by the Primrose police.

They were charged with businesses robbery and theft of a motor vehicle, and will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.

Police are still searching for the remaining suspects.

The intersection of Rietfontein and Shamrock roads in Primrose was closed due to an active crime scene.
