ANC-led coalition fully behind Masina

Councillors belonging to the African Independent Congress (AIC), Independent Ratepayers Association of SA (Irasa), Patriotic Alliance (PA) and the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), joined the mayoral office on the eve of the Motion of No Confidence debate to show their support for executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina.

The council chambers at the Germiston Civic Centre housed the ANC-led coalition’s press briefing, on Wednesday, a day before the Motion of No Confidence against executive mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina would be heard.

The motion, tabled by the DA, challenged the leadership of the mayor and his party’s capability to run the metro.

The press briefing was attended by firm coalition members from various organisations such as the Rev Mxolisi Koom of the African Independent Congress (AIC), Izak Berg of the Independent Ratepayers Association of SA (Irasa), Dino Peterson from the Patriotic Alliance (PA) and Jackie Seroke from the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC).

Executive mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina was the centre of attention on Wednesday at the Germiston Civic Centre, pending the Motion of No Confidence debate against him tabled by the DA.

The members who formed the coalition over two years ago sought to assure the media and residents of their confidence in the motion failing, as the DA had no real substantiated claims against the mayor.

“Joining this coalition was a very easy decision for me; the ANC gained 48 per cent of the votes with the DA only gaining 34 per cent support.

“It would have been disastrous for a political party to run a metro with only 34 per cent support. You cannot do it. Other political parties would undermine you and call the shots,” said Berg.

“I am here to ensure the residents only get the best in Ekurhuleni.

“The decision I took to join this coalition was driven by stability, which we have proven over the last 25 months.

“The DA in the metro has run out of ideas.”

Certain the outcome of the Motion of No Confidence against executive mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina would fail, Izak Berg from the Independent Ratepayers Association of SA (Irasa) showed his support for Clr Mzwandile Masina last Wednesday.

Rev Koom claimed the motion tabled by the DA was frivolous and vexatious.

“Gathered here today, we are all people-centred organisations.

“When running coalition governance, we run with the understanding that we are serving people who have confidently voted for us.

“We are not here to serve ourselves, we are not here to posture in any power class of politics,” said Koom.

The coalition firmly stood behind the mayor and was confident that their “obsession with service delivery” would be a role player in keeping the mayor in office, as every voter in council would be aware of this fact.

At the press briefing, held at the Germiston Civic Centre, Rev Mxolisi Koom of the African Independent Congress (AIC) represented his party in the ANC-led coalition briefing.
