Happening NOW: Tensions run high as council debates Motion of No Confidence in Ekurhuleni’s mayor

Support for and against the motion as political parties debate.

Security is tight around the Germiston Civic Centre this morning as the Motion of No Confidence brought by the DA against the executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mzwandile Masina, is underway in the Germiston council chambers.

Speaker of council Ald Patricia Kumalo confirmed that the meeting is an extraordinary council meeting with only one item on the agenda, that being the Motion of No Confidence.

The GCN has two journalists inside the council chambers to report on the debate as it unfolds.

The meeting opened with singing from both sides, with ANC councillors singing both inside and outside the chambers and the DA carrying signs reading “Mayor must go”.

As special guests from both the ANC and the DA were welcomed, booing from both camps greeted them.

Clr Phillip de Lange, DA leader in Ekurhuleni, tabled the motion and said, “The metro is being crippled under the mayor’s management.

“Service delivery issues are not being addressed and the mayor is responsible for service delivery in the metro.

“The City of Ekurhuleni is in crisis and the resources of the municipality are not being used to their full capacity in the best interests of the municipality and its citizens.”

The EFF supports the motion, but will decide how they will move forward, working with the DA, in the future.

The Freedom Front and COPE are supporting the motion, while the IFP stated that they were not approached by the DA or the ANC and are thus abstaining from the motion.

The African Independent Conference are against the motion and stated their support for the mayor, as did the Patriotic Alliance, who questioned the DA’s logic as they do not have the voting numbers to get the motion to stick.

Independent Ratepayers Association of SA supports the mayor and is against the motion.

Izak Berg accused the DA of being its own worst nightmare.

“The DA couldn’t save Nelson Mandela Bay with only 34 per cent support, so how can they hope to run the metro with only 34 per cent support?” Berg said.

The debate is continuing, with other political parties still to provide responses.
