Hacked up cows found in vehicle on the N3 highway, one arrested

One arrested after highway patrol members flag down a suspicious-looking vehicle and four men make off on foot.

A normal night shift came to an eventful end in the early hours of  Tuesday morning when East Rand Flying Squad members, specifically members from the Germiston SAPS Highway Patrol Unit, flagged down a Nissan bakkie.

The driver of the bakkie was signalled to stop at 5.15am on the N3 highway north, near Grey Avenue in Germiston.

The Nissan single cab bakkie seemed heavily loaded which prompted the officers to inquire about the vehicle, its occupants and their suspicious-looking load.

“We signalled the driver to stop and he obliged, however, as soon as the bakkie came to a halt, four men, including the driver, jumped out and ran off,” said Const Lehlogonolo Mothapo, the arresting officer.

“Three men emerged from the front of the vehicle and one from the back of the bakkie, supposedly guarding the load.”

The bakkie had been carrying about five cow carcasses.

Mothapo and his colleague, Const Ntuthuko Maphumulo, chased one suspect on foot.

“We managed to catch one of the four suspects.

“He declined to answer any of the questions we asked him concerning the vehicle and the load.

“We read him his rights and arrested him,” said Mothapo.

The suspect, since detained in Germiston SAPS custody, was arrested on a charge of suspected stolen goods.

“The case has been handed over to detectives at the Germiston Police Station, who will investigate further,” said Mothapo.
