Update: Over 5 000 commuters affected after train torched at Germiston Station

The cost of the damage is estimated at R6.5-million.

Metrorail has apologised to its commuters for the inconvenience caused after passenger trains were set alight at Germiston Station on Tuesday (October 16).

Lillian Mofokeng, senior manager: marketing and communications Gauteng Metrorail, Passenger Agency of South Africa said, “Metrorail thanks commuters for their support and understanding during this difficult time and sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused.

“Two Metrorail trains, namely, 0316 and 0704, were torched while stationery at Germiston Station on platforms three and eight, respectively.

“Another train travelling from Germiston towards Springs was also torched damaging the seats only and no injuries were reported in all incidents.”

More than 5 000 commuters were affected by train delays as a result of these incidents.

The cost of the damage is estimated at R6.5-million.

Buses were arranged to assist commuters to complete their trips.

This morning all train operations were back to normal.

“Management thanks the emergency services and technical teams who helped on the site and restored normal operations,” Mofokeng said.
