Update – Power restoration delayed at Elsburg Substation, as new equipment is sourced

Metro engineers and technicians continue to work to restore power following an explosion and building collapse at the Elsburg Substation.

Following an explosion and building collapse at the Elsburg Substation in Ostend Road on Tuesday morning, several suburbs in Germiston were plunged into darkness.

The affected areas include, but are not limited to, Delville, Collin Wade, the industrial area of Germiston South, Parkhill Gardens, Tedstoneville, industrial areas fed from Enterprise, and parts of Hazeldene, Germiston South, Elsburg and the Germiston CBD.

The metro first estimated that the power would be restored by 9am, this morning (Wednesday).

However, after working through the night, technicians have now estimated that power will only be restored by 8pm this evening.

“A team from the metro worked throughout the day to remove the debris and the roof of the damaged building so that they could begin testing the equipment,” said Ward 39 councillor Alta de Beer who visited the site several times throughout the day.

“During testing, the existing equipment failed and new equipment had to be sourced, leading to delays.

“Replacement equipment was delivered to the site this morning but installation and commissioning of the new equipment will take hours.”

Further details will be released when they become available.
