Every day is Older Persons Day at Methodist Homes

The community should uphold the dignity and protect the rights of the elderly.

Methodist Homes considers every day an opportunity to honour and respect their residents and take every precaution to uphold the dignity and to protect the rights of its more than 2 000 residents.

International Day of Older Persons was designated by the United Nations on December 14, 1990, to create awareness around matters affecting the elderly such as elder abuse worldwide.

The theme for this year was Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions and was observed on October 1.

South Africans commemorate the day as part of a national Older Person Week and Social Development Month.

Methodist retirement homes are comfortable, caring homes for the elderly.

The World Health Organisation plays a significant role by actively promoting public awareness.

Statistics show that worldwide there are currently around 700 million people over the age of 60 and it is predicted that by 2050 this figure will have risen to two billion.

“The fast-changing dynamics of communities and the subsequent dramatic increase in the needs and challenges faced by older persons must be addressed by putting the right measures in place and ensuring ongoing support and awareness,” said Methodist Homes nursing services manager, Estelle du Toit.

Methodist Homes professionally manages 12 villages in Gauteng and three in the North West province offering a wide selection of retirement accommodation options including life rights and rental units, as well as full board and lodging.

“Eight villages offer mid and high care services with qualified nursing staff and highly trained care workers who offer much-needed support and care to frail residents,” said Estelle.

In addition to Prim Villa in Primrose Hill, a dedicated home for residents living with severe Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, four of the frail care centres are also equipped to provide all the necessary specialist care to residents with early onset and moderate Alzheimer’s.

“Senior citizens continue to make a valuable contribution to our society and we ask everyone to join us in our pledge to continue providing not only the very best care but to do so with the respect and love the elderly rightfully deserve to ensure that they live with dignity during their golden years,” said Estelle.
