Fire in Germiston home may be caused by alleged illegal cable connections

Preliminary scene investigations by Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) reveal illegal cable connections connecting power to 15 shacks could be the cause of the fire at a Germiston home.

Germiston Fire Station responded to a call of a burning house early on Monday at 8.10am.

A seven-room house situated on the corner of Victoria and Linton Jones streets was well alight when the firefighters arrived.

“Upon arrival, the crews initiated an active offensive firefighting operation, the flames were knocked down and hot spots were cooled off speedily,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).

After the completion of an on-the-scene assessment, it was found only one room had burnt down completely and the others had sustained smoke and water damage.

No casualties were recorded on scene due to the blaze.

It is alleged the occupants of the house are not the rightful owners of the property.

“It was found that unprofessional electrical cables were lying around on scene.

“Preliminary scene investigations show the illegal cable connections might have sparked the blaze.

“Furthermore, outside the main building, 15 shacks were built and all were connected to the power supply from the main house,” said Ntladi.
