EMPD tackles speedsters on the N3 highway in Germiston

Three drivers were arrested for allegedly travelling at excessive speeds.

Three drivers were arrested for excessive speeding on the N3 highway southbound at the Elands Interchange near the Rand Airport exit, on Sunday.

The arrests were made between 6am and 11am at the Elands Interchange near the Rand Airport Road exit, which is a 120km/h zone.

At 8.20am, a 31-year-old male driver in a blue BMW 3 Series, who claimed to be a pharmacist, was clocked at 181km/h.

He advanced the reason that he was rushing to open his business.

A 36-year-old male driver in a white Toyota Sport was clocked at 166km/h at 10am and was the second arrestee.

He claimed to be rushing home for personal reasons.

The third arrested speedster was a 47-year-old man driving a gold VW Golf caught at 8.15am doing 161km/h.

He stated that he was late for a business appointment.

The trio was locked up at the Germiston Police Station on charges of reckless and negligent driving.

They were subsequently released after posting bail of R1 000 each.

They were expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
