Workers demand answers from metro as to when jobs will be made permanent

Protesting workers from the Department of Solid Waste took to the streets of Germiston on Thursday, demanding permanent positions from the metro.

Traffic in President Street in the Germiston CBD came to a standstill on Thursday as workers from the Department of Solid Waste marched to the Germiston Civic Centre.

The marchers, who remained peaceful, were closely monitored by members of the EMPD.

The workers, from across Gauteng, demanded permanent positions from the metro.

“We cannot continue to work without the offer of a permanent position,” one of the protestors told the GCN.

The group claim they have been approaching various departments within the metro since February and have handed over a memorandum.

The departments included the offices of the mayor, Mzwandile Masina, and city manager, Dr Imogen Mashazi.

They have, however, received no response.

They feel the metro has failed them.

“We do not trust them anymore.

“We have approached the mayor and city manager and ANC chief whip six times.

“We’ve even approached the Gauteng premier’s office.

“All we receive is an official stamp and a promise they will get back to us but they never do,” explained another worker.

It was also reported that the metro has begun outsourcing workers from other provinces, which workers find unacceptable.

“Why are they outsourcing when they have workers here willing and ready to work,” a female protester said.

The GCN approached the metro for comment, but at the time of going to press none had been forthcoming.
