Update: Eskom and DEMS work tirelessly to restore power, met with delays

Wadeville recycling company fire leads to multi-suburb power outage, teams work to restore power.

After a fire broke out at a Wadeville recycling company on Tuesday night, many suburbs were plunged into darkness.

The fire spread through dozens of cardboard bales stored on the Commercial Road company’s premises, in a servitude under Eskom’s overhead power lines, and burnt and damaged the lines.

As a precaution Eskom made the decision to switch off the power, leaving Wadeville, Albemarle, Dinwiddie, Dewittsrus, Norton Small Farms, Union, Elsiehof and parts of Lambton, Klippoortjie, Roodekop and Leondale without power.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) and Eskom technicians worked hard throughout the night in an attempt to restore power, however, they were unsuccessful,

“The material stored at the company spontaneous ignited when exposed to oxygen while being moved,” explained said Ward 39 councillor Alta de Beer.

“This has slowed down the restoration process, and the wind is not helping.

“DEMS and Eskom technicians are still on scene and everything is being done to restore power supply.”

De Beer further stated she would be on scene for a meeting and would provide more information as it became available.
