Help victim empowerment centre restore hope in victims

The Primrose SAPS Victim Empowerment Centre is available to help all victims of crime with counselling.

Victims of crime in Primrose have a safe haven to go to in the form of the Primrose SAPS Victim Empowerment Centre.

Hennie and Yolanda Steyn, who are both chaplains, recently took over the running of the centre and told the GCN the doors are open to all victims of crime.

Hennie has been doing voluntary chaplain work for the past 14 years, before which he was in the brake and clutch business.

“I was called to it and have a passion for the work of a chaplain,” he said.

“I love to sit and listen to people and see how I can help them.”

To run the centre Hennie said they also had to do additional counselling training.

The victim empowerment centre has six volunteers who help victims with trauma counselling, as well as offering support in court.

Hennie told the GCN that there are a number of needs the centre has in order to make sure victims (especially rape victims) are given the necessary dignity after the crime.

Currently he is funding most of the centre’s needs from his own pocket.

A big need for rape victims is sanitary towels and to this end local company Palesa Pads has come on board and will be donating pads.

However, more are still needed by the centre.

The Primrose SAPS Victim Empowerment Centre is also in need of the following:

• A large container to store items in.

• Clothing for children (from babies) and women.

• Non-perishable food.

• Underwear (bras and panties).

• Coffee, tea, milk and sugar.

Hennie is encouraging victims to report crimes straight away for evidence purposes.

To assist the Primrose SAPS Victim Empowerment Centre or if you are a victim of crime who needs assistance call the Primrose Police Station on 011 842 0500 or visit the centre at the police station in Poppy Road, Primrose.
