Blood, sweat and tears witnessed as cross-country season returns

Five local primary schools gathered at Laerskool Delville on Wednesday afternoon to mark the beginning of the new cross-country season.

The season for long distance running has returned.

Laerskool Delville hosted the first 2018 cross-country event on Wednesday afternoon.

Learners from Laerskool Elandia, Laerskool Elsburg, Germiston South Primary School and Colin Mann Primary School competed in 2km and 3km races on the day.

The starting line was filled with beaming athletes, but the finish line told a different story for many.

Some completed their race with tears and bruises while others strutted over the finish line.

The u-9 and u-10 girls and boys took part in the 2km race and the u-11 to u-13 age groups ran the 3km race.

 

Thando Khumalo represented Laerskool Elandia well by securing the second place position in the girls u-10 2km cross-country run at Laerskool Delville on Wednesday.

In the u-9 girls’ race, Sasha Lee Labuschange from Laerskool Delville came in first place, Zama Nxumalo from Laerskool Delville came in second place and Mathapelo Masangane from Laerskool Elandia took third place.

In the u-9 boys’ race, Prins Aga came in first, followed closely by fellow Laerskool Delville schoolmate Brydon Lombara who came in second and Kgotso Mokoena from Laerskool Elandia who came in third.

In the u-10 girls’ race, Talia de Gouveia represented Colin Mann by taking first place, Thando Khumalo from Laerskool Elandia came in second and Amahle Moloi from Laerskool Delville came in third.

The first and second places were occupied by Laerskool Elandia in the boys u-10 race.

Tadimo Msibi took first place followed by Tlhontlho Shiburi in second with Laerskool Delville’s Dorius van Eeden coming in third.

The longer races started shortly after the last athlete in the boys u-10 race crossed the finish line.

Denise Marais from Laerskool Delville, who lead for most of the race, finished in first place, Keisha Nkomo from Laerskool Elsburg came in second and Jaco-Mari van der Merwe from Laerskool Delville came in third in the u-11 girls’ race.

In the u-11 boys’ race, Zieg Wolmarans from Laerskool Delville took first place, Owami Mohale from Germiston South Primary School came in second and Lindelani Dudumaye from Laerskool Elsburg came in third.

The u-10 girls start their 2018 cross-country journey at Laerskool Delville on Wednesday.

In the u-12 girls’ race, Michaela Roos from Laerskool Delville came in first, Reshoketswe Mahlangu from Laerskool Elsburg came in second and Lazya Mashabela from Laerskool Delville came in third.

First place in the u-12 boys’ race was occupied by Fhatuwani Nelumonzi from Laerskool Delville, Sibonelo Nxumalo also from Laerskool Delville came in second and Terry Ntanga from Laerskool Elandia took third place.

The u-13 girls’ race saw Tiffany Cross from Laerskool Delville take first place, followed by Neo Makuma from Laerskool Elandia who came in second and Carmen Bentz from Laerskool Delville who came in third.

The u-13 boys wrapped up the races.

In first place was Muso Pasho from Colin Mann, Diako Msibi from Laerskool Elandia came in second and Gideon Barnard from Colin Mann came in third.
