Little ones from Pitter Patter learn all about cargo screening

Bidvest Protea Coin K9 Unit continue their mission to educate children about working dogs.

Pitter Patter Academy opened their doors to the Bidvest Protea Coin K9 Unit last Friday to learn more about working dogs.

Lorraine Claassen, Lazaro Kilino and their K9 unit sniffer dog Matt conducted a cargo screening demonstration for their delighted hosts.

“We have a positive-run and a negative-run in our screening to indicate the existence of explosives in a package.

“Our dogs do not scratch packages as they may explode if there are explosives in that particular package.

“They sit to indicate the existence of explosives in a package.

“Other sniffer dogs are trained to sniff out drugs and scratch packages to indicate the existence of drugs,” said Kilino, a dog handler at the Bidvest Protea Coin K9 Unit.

The K9 unit said they aim to teach children in and around Ekurhuleni about the functions of a K9 unit and show them the many talents which dogs possess.

“We get a variety of clients from warehousing establishments and airports who employ us to screen their imports for explosives.

“It’s important for children to know what their pets can do and show off their capabilities,” said Claassen, operations clerk at Bidvest Protea Coin K9 Unit.

“Matt is such a loveable dog.

“The children enjoyed the visit from the K9 unit.”

“Other than the one child who watched the demonstration through a window, because of her fear for dogs, everyone else had fun.

“We’re grateful for the visit,” said Chervani Laas, a teacher at Pitter Patter.
