Youngsters to showcase their talents in top choir competition

The Cantare Children’s Choir to represent South Gauteng at the World Choir Games.

Tshwane will be buzzing with music when the World Choir Games are hosted in South Africa from July 4 to 14.

This exciting and historic event is the first of its kind in South Africa and on the African continent and will boast over 300 choirs with 16 000 participants from 60 countries.

One of the choirs is the Cantare Children’s Choir, also known as the South Gauteng Regional Choir.

With 66 talented voices coming from all over Gauteng, this choir has won many international awards and accolades.

Germiston children also feature in the choir with learners from Laerskool Elspark, Eketsang Secondary School and Mohobeng Primary School making up the ranks.

In 2016 the choir returned from Spain where they participated in the Fiestalonia International Competition of Montserrat with a Grand Prix prize (100 per cent) in the Folklore section and a first prize in the children’s choir competition.

About 50 per cent of the young choristers come from disadvantaged homes and schools.

“The choristers worked extremely hard and they are super excited about the event.

“We are just going there to do our best and to enjoy ourselves as ambassadors of our region and country.

“We are looking forward to this competition and the once-in-a-lifetime experience for some of our choristers,” said Ida Strydom, founder of the choir.

“This isn’t the first time our choir will be representing the country, and the province, at the World Choir Games, and it will not be the last time either.

“They previously attended the games in Bremen in Germany, Xiamen in China and Graz in Austria.

“With many new, talented, voices joining our choir every year, we know that we can keep the tradition of choral singing alive for years to come.”

The 10th World Choir Games will take place over two competition phases with competition performances, celebration concerts and legacy concerts at several venues across Tshwane.

There are two competitions at the World Choir Games, namely the Open Competition and the Champions Competition where Cantare will participate.

The Champions Competition is designed for experienced choirs that have already proven their level of proficiency at other international competitions.

The winners will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals and each category winner gets the title and trophy Champion of the World Choir Games 2018.

The Open Competition is open to any choir as it is designed for choirs of any level of proficiency and explicitly those without any or only little competition experience.

The participants get to know their artistic level via the evaluation of the jury and are awarded a gold, silver or bronze award.
