Sports Against Crime gets the youth off the streets

The Germiston SAPS and other stakeholders hosted Sports Against Crime on Youth Day.

Youngsters in Dukathole had a grand time on Youth Day, last Saturday, when they took to the sports fields.

The event entitled Sports Against Crime, organised by the Germiston SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit, the Germiston SAPS communications department, the Germiston SAPS Crime Prevention Youth Desk, the SANDF, and Johnson Matthey, saw young people showing off their skills on the football pitch and the netball court.

They were also given the opportunity to showcase their talents in the arts with youngsters getting the crowd going with their dancing.

“The annual event gives the SAPS the opportunity to encourage the youth to move away from wrongdoing and see sport as a way of making their lives better,” said Const Maxwell Mabunda, communications head for the Germiston SAPS.

“This year we managed to attract a bigger crowd than in previous years, with about 1 000 people attending the event.”

The event started with a fun walk from Germiston Extension Five to the Dukathole sports grounds.

The youth were organised in u-17 and open football teams and u-17 and open netball teams.

The winners of the u-17 football competition were City United, with the open division being won by Super Eagles.

In the netball, Goal Achiever took the top spot in the u-17 division with Powerful Girls winning the open section.

All the winners received a team jersey, a medal and a trophy.

Trophies were also awarded to Sifiso Ntjiza (6), Empire Group and Latin Extreme Music for their dancing skills.

The trophies and medals were handed to the lucky recipients by Ndima Rwanda (the site services director at Johnson Matthey), Capt Thomas Nkosi (Germiston SAPS), Pvt Sibusisio Shabangu (SANDF), Ward 91 councillor Oupa Tshabalala and Ward 35 councillor Jeff Mthembu.
