Police crack down on illegal alcohol sales

Three illegal taverns were closed down by the Primrose police in the Makause informal settlement.

During a recent operation in the Makause informal settlement, the Primrose police closed down three illegal taverns, confiscated volumes of alcohol and arrested three suspects, aged between 33 and 42 years old, for dealing in liquor without a licence.

“Officers from the Primrose Police Station entered the settlement on foot to patrol.

“During the patrol, they noticed residents buying and drinking liquor at the three separate taverns,” explained communications officer for the Primrose police, Sgt Styles Maome.

They approached the owners of each tavern introduced themselves and asked for the owners’ liquor licences.

“None of the owners had a liquor licence and they were arrested,” said Maome.

The suspects were taken to the Primrose Police Station where they were later released on a warning after paying an admission of guilt fine.

The alcohol confiscated during the operation will be destroyed.
