Women of Strength gets to grips with women abuse

Louise Wood has a new organisation which seeks to empower women in abusive marriages or relationships.

Former Germiston resident and founder of Girl & Guy Dream Come True charity Louise Wood now hopes to establish a safe haven for abused women and children in Germiston.

Through her new charity organisation Women of Strength created by God, Louise has mobilised around her the support of leading women in diverse fields, including business executives Lorraine Mngadi and Winnie Motaung, spiritual leaders Judith Mokgoatsana and Madeleine Mbiya and social worker Hannie Reyneke.

Women of Strength provides comprehensive support to empower abused women to make the transition towards freedom and restoration together with their minor children.

This support includes homes of safety, counselling, spiritual assistance and related services.

Their focus includes both physical and verbal abuse and extends help to men as well.

“My first husband wooed me, but then he brutally abused me and finally practically owned me.
“I found myself imprisoned in a desperately unhappy marriage.
“I later married a much older man, a well know sportsman and SA boxing champion.
“He was a great father figure to my two children and enabled them to grow up in a stable family home,” said Louise.

Louise added that it was Christianity that empowered her to overcome her tribulations and embark on the road towards restoration.

“I now use my experience to empower other women who have suffered abuse to also become women of freedom, victory and restoration,” she said.

Judith said the strength of Women of Strength is that it puts God first.

“Most often it’s only by tapping into their Christian roots that women find the resilience to break away from abusive relationships and set out towards lives of freedom.

“Women abuse is almost like a hidden sickness in our society because most abused women are either afraid or ashamed to expose their suffering or do not see any road towards healing,” she added.

Although her primary focus is currently on Women of Strength, Girl & Guy Dream Come True will be continued in the future with a new format where it will serve deserving matriculants from the two Germiston schools her children attended, Germiston High School and Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston.
