Building goes up in flames in Germiston CBD

Firefighters battled a blaze at a building in Germiston recently.

Ekurhuleni firefighters were up to the task at hand after a multi-storey building caught fire at the corner of Park Road and Garden Street in the Germiston CBD, last Friday.

The same day saw the world celebrating International Firefighters Day in honour of firefighters across the globe who had lost their lives while on duty.

“Members of the public drove to Germiston Central Fire Station to report the building which was well alight.

“Upon arrival on the scene, the middle storey of the three levels was well alight and flames were protruding through the windows and spreading to the upper level,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).

The crews who arrived first promptly initiated a defensive flame knockdown strategy while awaiting backup from neighbouring fire stations.

“Rapid intervention prevented the entire building from the harrow of the blaze.

“As per information received on the scene, an electric double plate stove was left unguarded while someone was cooking.

“The entire floor caught alight because of wooden material used for partitioning.

“A total of 22 rooms burnt to ashes fuelled by a number of LPG cylinders which exploded during the active firefighting operations,” said Ntladi.

No casualties or fatalities were recorded in the blaze and the scene was handed over to the police for further investigation.

“DEMS encourages members of the public to memorise local emergency numbers to have effective service delivery during life-threatening emergencies.

“A challenge encountered on scene was members of the public who attempted to loot the shops on the ground floor while the fire was blazing and that interfered with our smooth operations so law enforcement had to be called for safety purposes,” Ntladi said.
