Educational outing for the elderly

The Environmental Resources Management Department continues their educational programme with the elderly of the metro.

The Environmental Resources Management Department recently hosted Thokoza Care for the Aged in yet another environmental programme for the elderly at the Rondebult Bird Sanctuary.

The master of ceremonies, Prince Rulashe, welcomed guests and got the programme running with his opening speech.

“We don’t host events, we create partnerships.

“We strive to live up to the metro’s motto: ‘A partnership that works’.

“We strive to create partnerships with different stakeholders and create awareness through our educational programmes,” he said.

The programme, which is designed for the elderly, also aims at involving surrounding communities in the mandate of saving water and preserving nature.

Lindiwe Nkosi from the Environmental Resources Management Department acknowledged the stakeholders and thanked them for their continuous support.

“This would not have been possible without the involvement of our partners and stakeholders, namely Thokoza Care for the Aged; Coca-Cola, who sponsored refreshments and Copper Canyon Spur, who assisted with the catering. A big thank you to our sister department, the Department of Water and Sanitation,” she said.

To kick-start presentations, Miyelani Chamango from the Department of Water and Sanitation engaged guests with tips on how to save water by giving a presentation about water conservation.

He also gave advice on how car-wash owners could reduce their water bills by using buckets instead of hosing down vehicles. He mentioned that the department also gave out buckets to car- wash businesses in the metro.

Lucky Mathonsi from the Environmental Resources Management Department presented his waste management presentation, which was followed by Thomas Mashele from the same department giving the last presentation of the day about energy efficiency. He urged those who use pre-paid electricity to purchase electricity on the first day of every month as this was the most opportune time to get full kilowatts.

Fitness instructor Rebothile Mathebane from Njabulo Eco Health and Fitness in Thokoza led the senior citizens in a 30-minute aerobics session. This was followed by environmental games for the elderly, which were conducted by Mashadi Kanyane from the Environmental Resources Management Department.

The department also revealed a special surprise for one of its partners, Spur Copper Canyon, when it handed them a hamper filled with toiletries to be donated to the Epworth Children’s Home as part of Spur Copper Canyon’s drive to help the home with basic necessities.
