Victim support centre needs more dedicated volunteers

The Germiston SAPS Victim Support Centre needs volunteers to assist them to aid victims of crime.

The Germiston SAPS Victim Support Centre, based at the Germiston Police Station, is in the process of expanding.

Due to the 24-hour a day service and support offered to the community the need has arisen to get more volunteers on board.

The victim support volunteers (men and women) are dedicated residents from the community who offer their time and skills at the Germiston SAPS Victim Support Centre.

The role of the volunteer is to be there as support for the victims of crime, by defusing situations, debriefing, and providing emotional and practical support.

Crime victims, volunteers will be working with are, but not limited to, victims of rape, hijacking, armed robbery and domestic violence.

Victims are also assisted as much as possible with referrals to the correct organisations to assist should their need lie outside the scope of the victim support centre.

All volunteers will receive upfront and ongoing training in all areas of defusing situations, debriefing, emotional and practical support, including advising victims on their rights and informing them of the process that will follow.

Volunteers need their own transport and a valid driver’s licence.

Should you be interested in giving your time to a worthy cause, join the Germiston SAPS Victim Support team by calling or SMSing Maria van Zyl on 082 520 2012.

The application closing date for volunteers is May 31.
