Four illegal taverns closed by police

Primrose police close four illegal taverns in Primrose’s informal settlements.

The Primrose police continued their efforts to curb the illegal sale of alcohol in their precinct.

During a recent operation, officers visited the Makause and Marathon informal settlements where they closed four illegal taverns and confiscated thousands of litres of alcohol.

“While officers were in the informal settlements conducting stop-and-search operations they witnessed residents buying alcohol at several different addresses.

“They entered the premises and asked the owners for their liquor licences. When they were unable to supply them they were arrested and their establishments closed,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

Five suspects, aged between 31 and 38 years old, were arrested and taken to the Primrose Police Station where they were charged with dealing in liquor without a licence.

“The suspects all paid admission of guilt fines and were released on a warning,” said Maome.

The alcohol confiscated during the operation will be destroyed.
