Water collection to make a difference in people’s lives

The LamDel community recently held a water collection for the communities of the Western Cape.

With Day Zero rapidly approaching for the Western Cape, a call for assistance came from the community and the residents of the LamDel area recently generously donated bottles and bottles of water.

Most were five-litre filtered bottled water, but rainwater and borehole water were also collected.

The learners of Colin Mann School also collected water which they handed over to the LamDel Residents Association (RA).

Sonja and Jacques van Wyk, who own Pick n Pay Lambton and Hazel Park, assisted by allowing their stores to be used as drop-off points for the water and they stored it until the LamDel RA could move the water to Bulldog Hauliers in Wadeville.

LamDel partnered with the Salvation Army whose Central (Gauteng) Division was also collecting water to be sent to its Western Cape Division.

The LamDel Residents Association was thrilled with the amount of water donated and how people opened their hearts to the cause.

The filtered water was designated to be used for drinking and cooking while the tap and grey water was to be used for flushing toilets, washing clothes, watering vegetable gardens, etc.

The Salvation Army in the Western Cape runs several crèches and outreach programmes that the LamDel exco felt could use the water to the benefit of the local residents and the children who were suffering.

“Bulldog Hauliers came on board and crated, wrapped, transported and stored not only the water that the residents in our area collected, but also the water that the Central Division of the Salvation Army collected.

“Our residents collected a total of 4 500 litres of water, and we couldn’t be prouder of them.

“Of course, without the help from the Pick n Pays, Bulldog Hauliers, local schools and our amazing residents none of this would be possible.

“We know that the water collected is not going to fill someone’s pool, but will be used as effectively and efficiently as possible to ensure the greater community is served by our local generosity,” said Lornette Joseph, the chairperson of the LamDel RA.

“We just cannot thank everyone enough.”
