Rest-a-While landlines out of order

Landlines are out of order at Rest-a-While Service Centre for the Aged.

Rest-a-While Service Centre for the Aged is experiencing trouble with its landlines.

To reach the centre, located on the corner of Shamrock Road and Churchill Avenue, call manager Trudy Carreira on 082 366 4010 or Michelle Besuidenhout on 083 226 0880.

The centre has been serving the elderly in Germiston for more than 50 years.

It got its start when a group of lonely and retired women started playing cards together.

They came together once a week and played cards and games over a cup of tea and discussed the possibility of expanding the group to include more people.

The founders did some research and soon discovered that there was a great need for a group like this in the Germiston community.

Knowing their homes would not be ideal to accommodate the growing number members, they approached the local welfare organisations and churches in the area which represented the elderly in the Germiston community, as well as the Germiston city council.

The council assisted the group in obtaining the centre’s first premises on the corner of Queen and Cross streets in Germiston, at a nominal fee.

The Rest-a-While Community Centre for the Aged had its first official minuted meeting on May 3, 1966, and was registered with the Department of Health and Welfare on October 17, 1969.
